We went to check out "The Factory" in Thamel which is in the same building as cafe Kaldi but because of the way its designed you feel like you're across the street from it. The first impression when you walk in is that this place has had a serious interior designer put effort into it. Either that or it's been copied from another club who's had a serious interior designer put effort into it - but I'll take what I can get in Kathmandu. The servers are all dressed in overalls (think assembly workers) which is very fitting and stylish and the bartender (see video below) is a world class juggler and totally amazed me with his skills.
I didn't check out the [free for customers] wifi but word on the street is that they have a great connection. If not, I guess you could always leach off Kaldi's awesome wifi next door. The decor is fake industrial (in a good way) and the seating areas are very stylishly done - I would love to hang out here with friends or spend an afternoon facebooking or catching up on email while I sip on some good Illy coffee. We visited in the afternoon and I have a strong hunch that this place will really come on its own at night with thumping music and a lot of good looking people packed into the space.
We interviewed the owner, Max (in the video below) who has a great vision of what he wants to accomplish and I predict that this will fast become the club to go to. I'm not really a fan of Tamas which hasn't quite got it right and Casablanca (my favorite lounge in ktm) is upscale and cozy but isn't a place to go crazy in. The factory fills a very important gap in the club scene in Kathmandu and I know I will be back very soon.
